A young boy was hit by a pickup Friday evening after he ran onto Sandalwood Drive.
The impact threw the boy several feet, Fayetteville Police Officer Victor Starling said. He said he did not know the boy’s name or age. The boy, who was conscious after he was hit, was taken to Cape Fear Valley Medical Center.
Neighbors say they believe the boy was running from a dog, which is kept on a leash in a nearby yard.
The driver of the truck, James Clark, 42, said he thought the boy ran into the street to follow a young girl who had crossed a few seconds earlier.
Clark said the boy, who was running with his back toward him with a pickle in his mouth, dashed out into the street too quick for him to stop. Police did not issue Clark a ticket or charge him with a crime.
Starling said the investigation continues.
Neighbors say that Sandalwood Drive is a dangerous stretch. Many drivers turn off Raeford Road and speed down their block, resident Kathy Andrews said.
