Regardless of where you want to go, the solution is to book via US Web sites and take advantage of special offers aimed at the US market. The Sunday Times online explains it all here:

Cheap flights via US websites

You can save a fortune with BA and other airlines by booking flights on US-based websites. Mark Hodson explains how.

Also, I recently saw £8,50 singles (+tax, of course) on Manchester-Toronto. Of course that's not the USA, but Niagara, Buffalo, and Detroit are not too far away via car or coach. Other options at http://www.canadian-affair.com

Zoom has some brilliant offers currently on Gatwick-JFK. http://www.flyzoom.com They have been hyping "low-cost transatlantic service" but so far, not as cheap as £10.

Michael O'Leary (Ryanair) has said 2010 for the new uber-cheap transatlantic airline. He has also said it depends on being able to acquire aircraft at a good price.

Unfortunately, with the new Air Passenger Duty adding £40 to transatlantic roundtrips (£80 for business or first class), plus fuel surcharges adding £65 to £80, even with £10 flights, it's actually going to cost minimum £125 return when it's all added up - though not as bad as the £1000 for BA now.

I was speaking too Tammy Halleywho runs On-line Travel Agency. Check out the very competitive prices at www.tammystravelbug.com.

Tammy told me that

As a business person you may find this very interesting. Travel is the largest and fastest growing sector on the Internet in the world today. This currently a USA based company but they are launching Canada in Jan 2008 and the UK shortly there after.

And also that the absolute very cheapest way to travel is obviously wholesale as travel agents do. You can find out how to own your own site @ www.ytb.com/tammystravelbug
