Day of Defeat: Source is an internet multiplayer game that simulates the battles of World War II. It was published with Steam on 29th of September, 2005. I had been playing the old Day of Defeat for so long that I just HAD to get it.
Valve's Source psychics-engine became famous from Half-Life 2. With it, Valve could do realistic conditions to the game. Your dead teammates/enemies become ragdolls and fly everywhere when an explosion happens next to them. Also tables and other stuff fly everywhere if a grenade explodes next to them, and dropped weapons fly about 200 metres away if an explosion happens near to them, when in the old game the weapons didn't move an inch even though you shot a rocket next to it.
The weapon selection in the start of the round has changed. The eight possiblities of the old Day of Defeat have become six: Rifleman, Assault, Support, Sniper, Machine Gun and Rocket. Riflemans can now aim better, because the secondary fire button makes the player raise the rifle so he looks through the iron sight. I myself don't like the addition, and would've rather kept the bayonet stab (Axis) or whacking with the rifle itself (Allied), because now in a tight close-quarters firefight, you'll have to change to a shovel (Axis) or a knife (Allied) when you run out of ammo to somehow survive, which can mean death because of it's slowness. Riflemans also have some rifle grenades, which IS a good addition, because most of the times, you need to get the grenade far away, and that is very hard with a normal handgrenade. Assaults also have a smoke grenade, something that was missing from the old game.
The Allied's M1 Carbine (gun number 2) has been given as Rocket's second gun and Greasegun has been entirely ripped out of the game, which really is a shame. BAR cannot be deployed anymore, it's shot like Thompson or any other SMG. It can also be set to shoot one bullet at the time, which is very wise thing to do when the enemy is far away.
The Axis' K43 (gun number 2) has been ripped entirely out of the game, alongside with MG34. Rocket has been given an UZI as the second weapon, which is a great addition. It's something I love to own with in close combat. It's a shame that the clips empty very fast and there's only two of extraclips. STG can be set to shoot only one bullet at time, like BAR.
Not a long time ago, there was also an addition of two new maps to the game (dod_jagd and dod_colmar) and with them a new game-style, Demolition. In it, you must get a C4-explosive and blow some stuff from the enemy. You must also watch out for the enemy explosives, which can of course be defused by pressing and holding the "Use"-key. I loved the game-style and it has grown to be my favourite.
Day of Defeat: Source is an awesome game, but if you're going to buy it only because you think it's gameplay is totally new, get ready to be dissappointed.
