The Dreamcast may be dead from a retail standpoint, but love for Sega's dead-before-its-time machine continues to this day. Banking off of that love, a group of phishers have executed a rather nasty trick using the Sega-forfeited "dreamcast.com" domain to gain access to e-mail passwords.
Over the last few days, a story began to circulate about Sega's resumedinterest in the console. On the old official web site, a new questionwas posted. "Do you still own a Dreamcast?" Fans of the consoleinstantly began to go through and register for an account to claim thatthey did indeed have one, thinking that Sega was trying to gauge theremaining install base as an indicator of whether or not a Dreamcastsuccessor was in the cards.
Unfortunately, it was all an elaborate ruse meant to uncover thepasswords of those who recycle them and their alternative e-mailaddresses. WHOIS information for the site has been investigated and itturns out that Sega has nothing to do with it. Though the fake siteremains up, one can no longer go through and register presently. One Destructoiderpoints out that anyone who got caught up in the fun should immediatelyditch the Dreamcast e-mail account they had and change the passwords ontheir regular e-mail accounts as well.
As unfortunate as this situation is, though, we're still hoping thatSega's paying attention. If people managed to hunt down and succumb tosuch a trick, then there's obviously still a little bit of interest ina new console from the house that Sonic built. Futile interest, but interest nonetheless.
