A music industry coalition is proposing that ISPs, mobile phone companies and device manufacturers pay a fee to the music industry for any illegal file sharing their products enable. Will this end DRM/filesharung issues, or is it a damn fool idea?
I think this is misguidedm it cannot be right to blame and charge the service providers for what is essensially a problem with its own product. Copyrighted music is owned by the music industry and the industry therefore has the responsibility for its usage... Overall, I think the illogical, providers should assist right owners to asser ownership and protect their properties, but to charge them for the actions of a minority of users is wrong.
It seems alos that they are giving up on the idea of suing members of the public for illegal filesharing, besides, the idea wont stop filesharing at all! If anything it indicated that they are accepting the state of affairs that currently exist... This is once again a mis-aimed attack from the music industry, fining ISPs for the actions of their users is just like fining car manuyfacturers of those cars which break the spped limit.
I think the Music Industry working with the web, with YouTube for instace, and also iTunes stores, and free legal content is the way to go, they should realise marketing potential and offer free content, and work with the web as a tool to make more money, not see it as a threat and back down to it.
Given the same logic... why not sue employers for giving people income to afford internet access to enable illegal downloading, the government for not catching everybody, farmers for supplying food which keeps downloaders alive...
Whats next, a propsal to tax breating air because some wrong doer is breathing it?
