Users of the Yahoo and Microsoft instant messaging programs can now contact each other directly.
The two firms have released software that ties the two networks into a huge community of 350 million users.

The trial software allows people to swap text messages but will eventually let people talk to each other too.

The move marks a break with the past when operators of the big instant message systems resisted calls to open up their networks.

I know their are ways of getting around this problem already but what does this mean for the future of Yahoo! and Microsoft! rumors have been flying this week about this suspected merger and its seems people got it right.

Its also said that Yahoo and Microsoft could be teaming up to provide MSN search or soon to be called Live Search a real chance out their in the search engine world with Yahoo! backing up MSN!

However this is really good for both companies who will certainly be making a bit of cash from this!

You could always use your Yahoo ID with MSN, just no Yahoo to MSN.

I'd just like to add, this is old news, and on windows (the latest yahoo, and MSN messengers) has not just been announced, but it has just come out of beta this week. I use it regularly... because it is just intergrated without you knowing, seamlessly in the latest of the two messengers in beta, and MSN 8.0 has been out of beta since May, and Yahoo beta has come out of beta this week, therefore the link up is officaly released this week I have many Yahoo contacts in my MSN messenger, SaaM for example is usually on Yahoo and not MSN!

Also, i'd like to say, that there has been no rumours as such, it is not unconfirmed, but it has been confirmed officially since October 12th 2005!!

I don't think it will mean "extra cash" really, but more of the combined force against google.
Yahoo and MSN will always be on their own search agenda, but eBay and yahoo are now teamed up, so instead of using Google Technology to index the site, it will be yahoo; this is a big blow for Google, and speculation has it, that if Amazin joins the front, Google could be brought down, with YPN PPC Ads, ans Live.com from Microsoft, as Microsoft is by far more trusted, when the Windows Live ideas are out of beta with Vista, Google is going to have to think of something new, as Yahoo already have Flickr, Overture (now YPN),
They have partnerships wth Fifa, and Ebay, owners of Skype (Just imagine skype intergration with Yahoo Messenger), BT (BT Communicator is intergrated with Yahoo Messenger)

The deal will expand Yahoo's share of Internet advertising, a market where it lost leadership to Google. Investors have been worried that eBay's highly profitable shopping site is being undercut as consumers increasingly find products through search engines. Google and Yahoo have introduced similar free services.

At the same time, eBay is spending $260 million a year to advertise its auctions on search engines, with 60 percent of that on Google, according to [my] estimates

The deal announced  gives eBay some new ways to make money from its large audience, but it does not directly address the concerns about competition. Yahoo will continue to offer its auctions and other online shopping services that compete directly with eBay.

EBay agreed to place on its site text advertisements sold by Yahoo. That gives Yahoo a major new partner just as the MSN service of Microsoft, which was the largest outlet for Yahoo's text ads, has switched to selling its own advertising.

Overall, however, I think the only reason they are providing this bridge software, is so you can use MSN on Yahoo, and also, to grab the market likes of Trillian, e-messenger.

In 1999, Microsoft connected its MSN Messenger client to AOL's AIM network - without authorization. The move let to a cat-and-mouse game of AOL cutting off its new competitor and MSN re-establishing communication with each update. Microsoft eventually gave up.
Yahoo and Microsoft will now command upwards of 44 percent of the market, according to research firm Radicati Group, putting new pressure on market leader AOL, which holds around 56 percent market share with AIM and ICQ.

Whats with the MSN!? (exclamation (!))
