My new mainboard has 2 or 3 PCI-Extreme slots.. They look like PCI slots that have been shrunk in the washing machine  O_o I read in the manual that they provide a better quality signal and can be used for sound cards and other stuff. I've not seen any cards advertised that are meant for this slot type yet though.

Does anyone have any information? Do regular PCI Cards fit in these slots or something?

You must mean PCI-Express.

I have yet to see a card that takes advantage of these slots.  Video cards use the longer, X16 slots, but I have yet to see a sound card use them.

The only PCI devices currently limited by PCI are RAID controllers.

Aren't there network cards that use PCI-E x1?

Yes, but only Gigabit cards can even come close to taking advantage of it.

Read down along that page, and you'll see a black icon on the right with \"PCI Extreme\".

What they meant was PCI-Express. No clue why they called it Extreme?

They did not mean PCI Express. I have one PCI Extreme slot on my motherboard, its the same shape as a PCI slot but I think it allows for faster and clearer data transfer somehow. The PCI-Express x1 slots are the tiny ones.

There is a PCI-Express x16.  That is probably what you have on your motherboard.

Dude, I know what I'm talking about. There is 1 x PCI-Express x16 Slot, 2x PCI Slots, 1 x PCI-Extreme Slot (same shape as PCI), and 2 x PCI-Express x1 slots. The PCI-Express 1 slots are the little tiny ones.

Never EVER heard of PCI-Extreme

I have heard of PCI-X (64 bit) and AMR (for modems and weird stupid things).

The PCI Express x16 Slot is Orange, the PCI Extreme Slot is Yellow, and the PCI and PCI Express x1 slots are all white.

The PCI Extreme slot is larger than the regular PCI slot, correct?

The yellow slot is what ECS calls the PCI Extreme slot, and is meant for
audio or video cards thanks to a better signal quality.

Apparently it does exist and is used for audio and video cards.  Strange, though, that Google didn't turn up anything more.  Whatever the slots truely are, they are rare.

Oh, and timm, my statements were not made to offend you or to insult your integrity, just to try and clear this up.  I thought you may have been mistaken.  :)

Sorry. The slot looks useful, maybe it reduces \"noise\" when you have your line out amplified or you want a clearer signal for active line-in, such as a guitar? Anyways, thats the slot I'll put my sound card in when it arrives.. 6 Channel Onboard sucks, because you can't use 6 channel speakers if you want to use a microphone or line in :/. The board has 3 ports which are configurable via bundled software. Sucks :(
