At first i thought the PS3 was stupid price and way too much for a games console but then i learned about blue-ray and how much they cost. So it is actually a good price to say it plays games and blue-ray. They are really good, and look brilliant. We have one connected with a very high quality HDMI cable to a 1080p True HD tv 46" and the blue ray looks brilliant. It even upscales regular dvds. It is worth the money. It is a brilliant piece of machinery.
It seems, 800fsbgang; was right, in that despite popular support in opposing systems, that we should wait until all are released.
iVirtua had access to pre release consoles a while back now; and then, it didn't seem very different when we took it for a test drive. But now, lets look at it from a business perspective.
The Sony PS3 is almost frowned upon by the internet community driving force supporting PC or Xbox 360 stances. The Wii and Nintendo from my observation stand in their own league, despite Nintendo’s attempts at changing this. The Sony PS3 was criticised for its continuities, but despite it, are they a good thing.
Without taking a "fanboy" stance and claiming the Sony PS3 is the best thing since sliced bread, Id be inclined to take a more neutral view. Don't get me wrong, as will all of my other contributions here, the Xbox will remain strongest, the Microsoft developers are some of the best in the world, the firmware is fast and reliable; and the Xbox Live community is the strongest and most popular, and will remain that way with PC-Xbox-PC Integration that cannot be beaten.
Through Visual aesthetics, the PS3 although bulky is not a bad piece of work; though power wise and technology wise, it can be said it is not over priced; though in context; the console is outrageously priced, maybe Sony need to make people realise it is more than a games console. Do games need Blu-Ray? Simple answer, no. Solid State is here to stay (Data Storage Wars - Optical ( DVD,BluRay), Magnetic, Flash). With a strong fan base and a wide, but not always quality games range (they are losing franchises such as the excusive GTA to Microsoft, and Microsoft and Nintendo (Halo, Red Steel) hold ever improving exclusive franchise; as with the disappointing PS3 launch line up), The real issue for Sony is whether they can get back the momentum they had with PS2. The only thing that is going to drive that is the number of titles available. It lacks a must-buy, stand-out game. Six months down the line we will see Metal Gear Solid 4, Gran Turismo and more PlayStation bankers. Though with familiar continuities, and even steps back, Sony seem to be producing the figures, yet again.
Despite Sonys recent downfalls in the technology industry, sonys strategies may be paying off. Although it may not be one of the most innovative or stunning piece o technology, it is certainly at the forefront in terms of the most technologically advanced, and also abiding the conventions, strictly, in the game console market. I personally think this is the right strategy; so despite the "bashing" of the PS3, maybe it should be given a chance in its own right. None of the consoles on the market can truly be compared, as a "fan boy" would, for its technological merits; and it seems the big corporations all have their marketing strategies sussed; and it doesn't look like a failure, just yet, in terms of sales.
Maybe they are targeting more of a TV addict culture?

It is worth the money.
Says a quite obvious TV addict.
Sales figures from the United States, where the console launched last November, suggest that PS3 is being outsold by rivals. Recent figures from sales trackers NPD show that the Nintendo Wii is outselling the PS3 by more than two to one.
But the NPD figures also show that the PS3 is selling slightly faster in the US than the Xbox 360 did at the same stage in its release.
how am i a tv addict just because i said it is worth the money. Blue ray players alone cost more than that and the ps3 is a games console as well.
I have never played on an xbox 360 before so i don't know what they are like but i don't like compairing them as they are each very different in their own way.
I have a Wii and a PS3 and they are both really good and i'm sure the xbox 360 is also really good.
Take 5 minutes and watch this "PS3 Sucks". Read and Consider the whole thing, then reply here. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=feTh6QWs-Xo
You'll never think the same; again.

Betamax, UMD... hey hey look at Sony's killer formats! All those way too expensive failures, and never took off. Blu Ray will fail. It is as simple as that. The industry backers are behind HD DVD, it is a cheaper, in many ways better quality, and is not several years behind like blu ray, which has been in development for years
Ah, and the 360's technical specs are way above that of the PS3; and the memory can't even handle thje processor in the PS3; not to mentions atari and major game developers dropping out, chart titles like splinter cell cancelling releases, and game development so expensive that there will be no budget games...
I won't bother writing any more here, just watch the video
By no means is the PS3 a waste of money, the reason it's so highly priced is the same reason the PPC Macs were so expensive (although Apple hasn't lowered prices for it's x86 line of Macs considering the production costs are so much lower). I'm already running Gentoo native on my PS3 and it's VERY fast. As a comparison it seems to run it quite a bit faster than my (now ye olde) Powermac G5 on DVD rips. So you're getting a PowerMac (with nowhere near as much memory but what there is, is faster) + next gen games console for considerably very little.
The PS3 is great. The technology is superior. 25 GB of space for a game DOES make for better games, when that space is used. (Who wants to put get up and put in another disc when you're relaxing?) Better graphics anyone?
CDs replaced cassettes and DVDs replaced CDs. Who is stupid enough to think that a 25 GB or 50 GB disc is not going to replace a 4 GB disc? What does HD DVD offer, 15 GB to 30 GB? Throw that crap away and give yourself a real upgrade... Honestly, would you buy a 150 GB hard drive or a 250 GB hard drive? It's an equal comparison, in terms of ratio. I guess if you're cheap and you don't want the space, sure, save some money to blow on something else. I'd rather have the best now, personally. I got the 360 the day it was released. It was a shame to take it back to have it replaced 8 months later... Don't even try to say that cheap is better... Perhaps you don't remember the problems that so many people had with the 360?

Solid State will still replace Optical storage prone to corrosion and damage or degradation over time.
On another note - what makes BluRay a more preferable option than the cheaper and more widely available HD-DVD?
Anyone that actually wants to spend money on a PS3 deserves to be stabbed. Repeatedly. With a blunt wooden stake.
Developers themselves are against Sony's design of the controller, the programming system they have to use. And really, HD-DVD has more merits than BluRay does. For a start it's region free, which is always instant win for a format.
I always stuck by the concept that It's not how much space you have, it's how you use it. And HD-DVD, read up on it. You'll like it's merits.'
After all, if you were buying a PC would you not take a look at the hard drives, and the specifications of each hard drive before you bought it? If I had a choice between a Western Digital 150GB Raptor X and random crappy 250GB drive, I'd go for the WDRX. Wouldn't you?
Old thread, but I was always a fan of the ps3 and its features and such.
I love my ps3 and I have no real problems with it, I use it more for a linux box rather than a gaming console but it all works out, I also plopped a 250 gb hard drive in it and all is good.
