Sony has been talking about how key Blu-Ray is to the success of the PS3 for quite some time. The theme has centered on larger storage space, and at GDC they entertained a possible use for the extra space. SCE estimates that next generation game design will need an approximate 100 to 1 ratio of available data to system memory; Blu-Ray will be able to offer a 200 to 1 ratio in this respect.
Phil Harrison hypothesized that this extra space could be used to develop one version of a game complete with all language translations for every region it is released in. A demonstration was prepared by Sony to show off Blu-Ray and the PS3. The demo centered on London's Picadilly Circus, which was shown in realtime. The system then pulled data from the Blu-Ray disk to show many details such as population of this area. It was also mentioned that data could be streamed onto the system to update all of these statistics.
cool. this sounds great. The reason why I will be using Blu-Ray instead of HD-DVD is because it will become the industry standard and of course will be implemented across many platforms including PCs, Macs, PS3 (big seller) and many more.
