Valve has just announced that their digital distribution platform, Steam, has reached 15 million users. This past year saw the introduction of Steam Community, which helped the service experience a 158% sales increase. 2008 hasseen Valve continue to not only add new games to the service, but morefeatures as well. Last month, Steamworkswas made available to developers, and the service is expected tocontinue to improve community features to support upcoming games suchas Valve's very own zombie shooter, Left 4 Dead.
As retail sales continue to dropand Microsoft's Games for Windows fails to pick up steam (no punintended), many have been foretelling the death of the PC as a viablegaming platform. It seems as though Gabe Newell, Valve's president, failed to get that memo.
"PC gaming is thriving, and has evolved into an era of constant connectivity," he explained
"that connectivity gives us the ability to have amuch better relationship with customers, not just for delivering ourgames, but across all aspects of our business."
Those faltering sales numbers fail to include digital sales, such asthose sold through Steam, and with 15 million users, there is clearly avery strong market for PC games outside the retail channel.
