Have you ever wondered why you, as a creative, were never allowed to assert your talent at school, possibly even in college? Take my sister Deirdra for example, she's an extremely talented 31 year old student studying for her Art degree.
Don't take my word for it, she is so talented that one of Ireland's best known artists bought one of her paintings. The problem of focusing in the right area to maximise a student's talent doesn't stop at school. Deirdra is being taught how to how change the colour on a Web site using HTML. What's that all about? It's not as if she will ever need that skill in the future. At least, she shouldn't be encouraged to learn that skill because we don't have enough people who specialise in core creative stuff.
If universities are going to teach students how to build Web sites so they can display their work, then at least show them how to use blog software so they don't need development experience.
Take a look at the video, this really is looking at grassroots. BIMA is currently conducting research into an awards ceremony for kids in high school in the hope that it will encourage their creative aspirations. This in turn will help ensure we don't have a skills shortage in the digital industry. We need more people who have what it takes to keep the UK at the center of excellence for creativity on the global stage.
This video is a little long but it's extremely funny. Trust me, the time will fly by.
