The easiest and quickest way to run apache is In Mac OS X system preferences. Click your Apple Menu, choose "System Preferences," then select "Sharing". Within the Sharing preference panel you'll see a number of options, only one of which is of immediate value. See the Web Sharing label... Click the Start button beneath it to fire-up the built-in Apache web server.
By default, the Apache server has been configured to use your Mac OS X "short" user name. (You can find your short user name in the Users preference panel. Click on "Edit User".) If your short user name is "samengland", for example, you can access your personal web site by opening any web browser on the local network and typing http://127.0.0.1/~samengland/. Don't forget that last forward slash!
You can also enable PHP 4 or 5, depending on what version of OS X you have.
To do so, edit the file /etc/httpd/hhtpd.conf
Make sure you've shut down Apache first, then uncomment all the lines for mod_php and anything else tha looks like PHP
Also, put files in /Library/WebServer/Documents/
to access them normally.
