I am looking to buy a new router, I currently have a Linksys WRT54G, and I havent had any problems, but after 4 years it's starting to die on me. So what do you guys think as a replacement router? I might go with Linksys again, but I want sugestions. Thanks!
I have a DLINK Modem Router 4xEthernet with wifi x2 works with Ninetdo DS and Xbox 360, and is very fast unlike some, Netgear, Dlink, Linksys (Specialised Server and Router companies) are always the best; I would never recomment Generic Brands, Consumer Branded products whatever they look like on the outside/name badge wise (BT, Telewest) as they are generic inside too, and are prone to fail.
I'd agree with sam about the whole generic branding, before I had a normal BT ADSL Router, and every so often the internet would just not connect. Now because we signed up to the BT Total Broadband package we get a wi-fi router which was built in collaberation with BT and I believe Netgear. You see its a bit more than a router, because you can have a phone attached to it to make SIP calls (like VOIP but not reliant on the internet) and also I believe soon BT will stream television through it, it has a few more features as well.
That BT Home hub is like more if not most of the newer mid range (£50-60+) consumer routers (less than 4 comuters), although this home hub is a way to charge you more in the long run, and the technology is propiretry and will be outdated, as with most products of the nature, as you will be paying for some exclusive proprietry product that will be discontinued, although it is a willfull upgrade, it wont last lonbg, and BT are now playing the games tele2 and telewest do as the demand for landlins drop alot mroe with mobile use increasing and internet use increasing. The SIP and streaming telivision are propirety (not like freeview) therefore very limited! It only has2 ethernet cable, making it a little impractical for those who own games consoles and more then one computer, and only 802 wreless which is a comprimise, but, its a package and is free, usual with most, If upgrading for a cost, Id still recommend an ADSL 4xethernet 2x wireless access point router that can handle a games console easily from Dlink, Netgear or Ljnksys...

If you want to carry on using the Internet as you have previously, then the short answer is no, _but_ if you want to use any of the new BT services like BT Vision or BT Homesafe, their home security system (more on this soon), then yes.
BT Vision and Homesave is all propiretary and I can safely say, failures, like most... (betamax?)
For BT Vision to work, the STB that comes with it has to be able to control the flow of data over the broadband connection, because frankly, getting TV to run over a 2Mb DSL connection is asking a lot of it. If little Johnny is sitting in the bedroom downloading goodness knows what, he's going to have to have his connection throttled, which Dad is watching the Football on Saturday night.
The initial issue is resolved So no more off topic unless suggesting another router
