One of the trends coming out of the 2008 Game Developers Conference was the rise of independent games. They're always there, and with a little digging you can find someincredible games, but this year it seemed like the indies were oneveryone's mind. One of the best games coming out of the IndependentGames Festival, World of Goo, won awards for Design Innovation and Technical Excellence, and the game deserves them. In fact, you should go preorder it; 2D Boy has made it worth your time.
The game is a sort of bridge-builder title where you use littlesentient blobs of goo to create structures to reach the goal in eachlevel... It's hard to explain in words, so take a look at the video.I took the plunge and preordered the game for $20, and the bonuses havebeen more than worth it. You receive the first chapter of the game toplay now, and it's been quite the challenge to get work done todayinstead of trying to rescue even more goo.
You'll also get the "Profanity Pack" that replaces the normal voices inthe game with naughty words; that's worth the price of admission rightthere. Lastly, you'll be able to get your download for the PC a weekbefore everyone else, which is a good thing: once you begin playing, you won't want to stop. The full release can't come soon enough.
"From the first beautiful menu—and yes, I did justdescribe a menu as beautiful—the world they've created is consistent, and consistently charming," Tycho wrote about the game in a Penny Arcade news post on Friday. He's right. The whole thing is so artfully put together that it feelslike any labor of love, but with enough polish that it feels like aproject with a much larger budget. This is a game that was intriguingat GDC, is getting raves now that the word is out, and deserves everybit of it.
