Microsoft is that much closer to completely lifting the veil off the second generation of Zune, its mp3 player and iPod competitor. We first mentioned the 2nd generation of Zune here. There are two models: a 4GB for $149 and an 8GB for $249.
The new stuff includes a Zune Pad navigation button, which uses wifi to sync music, movies and photos wirelessly as well as with your PC. This competes directly with Apple's iTouch, which does not yet support videos for wifi. There may also be a new store for Zune users to purchase content. Much of the Zune's software and the device's design has been rebuilt from scratch, as Microsoft has partnered with Toshiba and MusicNet to bring a better model for the 2nd Gen.
As with the first Zune model, there's an FM radio tuner, and the notable ability to wirelessly share songs with other Zune owners in proximity. What may help Zune the most may be the provision of DRM-free content. This hasn't been confirmed yet, but it's worth noting the potential for taking a bigger chunk of the market should the Zune go the DRM-free route. This has been the central tactic, aside from pricing, when it comes to newbies Wal-Mart and Amazon. So coupled with the Zune device itself, DRM-free content could in fact have a hefty impact. With Apple's recent price cut of the iPhone and the recent launch of the iTouch, this should be an interesting holiday season.
