After Bungie left Microsoft, most people—including studio head Harold Ryan—believed that the reason was to get away from the Halo franchise that brought the studio to prominence, and work on something new. But according to the upcoming June issue of Electronic Gaming Monthly, the studio may in fact be revisiting the series in the form of a prequel.
According to Quartemann—EGM's surprisingly accurate rumor section—the game will be a third-person shooter, which is most likely a separate entity from the Peter Jackson Halo game. The game will help fill out the back story of the Halo universe, and is expected to be revealed around the time of Gears of Wars 2 release in the fall.
If this rumor turns out to be true, it indicates an odd turn of events for Bungie: to leave Microsoft only to continue working on Halo games. Still, who could turn down the nearly guaranteed sales associated with the series?

The newest issue of EGM, due to arrive any minute now we hope, features more than just sexy details on Splatterhouse, it also contains rumored details on Halo developer Bungie's next project. Unsurprisingly, EGM says that it will be a shooter set in the Halo universe, with a move to a third-person perspective and a setting that predates the original Halo.
The enigmatic Quarterman writes that "WETA is definitely involved in some capacity" and that we might hear more about Bungie's post-Halo 3 work as early as November, officially.
