Long-rumoured at the beginning of the Xbox 360's launch, but entirely downplayed and unconfirmed, early widespread forum accounts of freezing, crashing and otherwise defective consoles have been a hot topic in the many months following, without ever any official word on the causes or solution.

Again rumoured for the past few weeks, but now officially confirmed via Microsoft Marketing's Gamerscoreblog, the company has confirmed that it has received a "higher than usual number of consoles coming in for repair," and isolated "a group that was part of the initial manufacturing run of the console."

In response, Microsoft has begun waiving return fees for any defective consoles bought in the US and Canada before the first of this year, even if the consoles are out of warranty. No such plans have yet been discussed for other regions, but with reports seemingly limited to a specified batch, that problem may be under control elsewhere.

For those affected, check the Gamerscoreblog for more information, or, as usual, call 1-800-4-MY-XBOX.

Yeah, I got mine last year in May and in July of that year I had to return it to sony because it was missing like 50 pixels and it was new, I didnt use it a lot. But, after waiting almost 2 months, sony sends me a new one, but its WHITE Its so much better then the black one I had originally bought! I call them and they say, oh we ran out of blacks hope you dont mind. I was so happy and I have it till' this day!
