What you need to get is a router.  You may also need to get some ethernet cable if you don't have enough.  Basically any computer store should have a router.  I'd recommend Linksys from my experience with them.

actually a switch usually costs more than your standard 4 port wire only router. Wireless routers yes are more expensive but i paid 89$ for my 8port switch and a dlink di-604 4 port DCHP router only costs around 70$

A standard 4-port, non-wireless router is usually in the sub-$50 US range.

Does your modem have USB on it?

If so, just hook up a computer that you can leave on whenever another computer wants to get onto the internet.

Connect the computers.

Then, use Internet Connection Sharing to share that connection.

Next, set an IP for that computer (192.168.1.2)
Subnet mask should be 255.255.255.0

Then, set up the other comptuers with ip addresses (192.168.1.*).  Tell them to use the default gateway of 192.168.1.2
Use the same subnet mask.

Hopefully, they will now use the internet connection on the main computer.
