Ok, so HL2 runs excellent on my laptop. It's the demo so I'm not sure if the retail version consumes any more resources than the demo, but it runs great.
I think Acer has the best notebooks for price/performance. Though they only give 1 year warrenty, you can always buy an extra 3 to 5 years of warrenty more. I think that would be the best investment IMO.

They do have excellent price to performance, however, investing in a laptop isn't nearly the same as investing in a desktop. Acer has pretty bad build quality, and they don't put much effort into their LCD displays (I've never seen a modern Acer with a glossy screen). Most Acer's are made of plastic, while Dells and Apples are made of aluminum, or in some cases (Dell Latitude, Dell Precision Mobile Workstation) magnesium-alloy.
Dells feature a cushioned hard drive in addition to the drop-detection technology usually utilized in notebooks.
