If there's one thing to truly love about the internet gaming community, it might be the irrepressible obsessive dedication that in the end benefits us all. Case in point, the latest undertaking by fan site metalgearsolid.org. Working off screenshots taken from The Document of Metal Gear Solid 2, one fan has exhaustively translated and recreated director Hideo Kojima's original design notes for the game stretching as far back as 1999. It's a fantastic read and opportunity to slip into the mind of one of gaming's most detail-oriented directors, and an even greater resource to spot ideas that never made it the final cut.
An example of the latter? The official source document showing that Snake's second Solid outing was originally to be titled MGSIII -- not only yet another of Kojima's ploys to catch players off guard, but to reference the "three tallest buildings in Manhattan," two of which, of course, no longer existed after September 11th.
