Myrdaal, I think I'm actually going to do that. Just upgrade the cpu and ram and that should be perfect. Even a little higher than I really need, but oh well.
Comes out to $599 even before all the shipping socked on.
Now to see if I can just get Dell to build it and get it to me soon enough without charging me my first born for shipping.
Yeah, with the P4 and 512mb RAM, that is a pretty decent system.
I'm not too keen on a refurbished laptop. Anyone have any experience with a refurb? [just noticed that some are previously ordered new, I guess someone ordered them and then canceled or something]
Thanks for the site. I just noticed that Dell offers specials beyond their normal rebates for Veterans. Looks like I would probably qualify.

One other question: In all of your opinions, do you think an AMD based lappy would run too hot in a very hot climate? I wouldn't want to be doing something on it and it fry because it's 120 degrees outside [which is about normal for summertime over there I've been told] Maybe an Intel lappy would run cooler? [shudders at the thought of actually buying an Intel machine]

Ok, then I guess the Turion is still in the running, which expands my choices a bit more.
On another note, after reading up on some things, it seems the Military is beginning to set up some sort of Satellite / wireless router system over there. It's probably only on the larger camps, but hey, I could very well be stuck on one of those. If that's the case, it would be great to be able to connect on my downtime. I could email/send pictures to my family and also keep a presence here.
Since 2003, laptop sales have topped 26,000 units sold by the PX in Iraq alone. That tells me that lots, and I mean LOTS of guys are buying them there. I'd rather get mine here, do any upgrades and just take it with me. Afterall, it's supposed to be a loooong flight.

Yeah, I was just going to mention that Dell probably would give you a discount because of your military status. imho, refurbs are just as good as new. Some of the parts are new, at least the ones that didn't work before. So, it is just like as good as a new one.

Now, the reason I chose the Presario is because of the video. Most of the low end Dells only have the Intel Integrated 900 graphics listed as an option. This is about the cheapest machine I could get that offered ATI's 200M with up to 128M of shared memory. I know, shared = junk - BUT! I'm going to just buy another 512MB for it to bump the system RAM to 1GB, so that should cover the decrease in RAM. I chose the Turion over the Sempron for obvious reasons [and over a Pentium because well...I like AMD better].
Plus, from many reviews I've read, it holds up a bit better than a Dell in rough conditions...a main selling point for my journey into no man's land.
Post what you think or if you find a better deal / system for about the same price.

Looks good, except the Pentium M is a better choice in your case over the AMD Turion. (better battery life, etc.) Nonetheless, looks good. Wish you luck in Iraq.

I know Predator, but the Pentium M also jacks the price up another $150.
This is my best bet for the funds I have. Besides, I should still be able to play some low end games with it if I have the Video RAM set to max. At least I hope. I know it can play Half Life 2, albeit a bit slow I think. If it can run HL2, then it can run a whole slew of other games.
I think that's a pretty good choice. I like going with the Turion, and don't think it's going to affect battery life that much. They are very close in terms of heat, and therefore I'd expect they'd be close in power consumption.
