Gaming is an industry dominated by men, and that unfortunately limitsthe full potential of gaming as art; there are crucial experiences, perspectives, and talentsmissing as a result. Hoping to change that, Sony Online Entertainmenthas launched a scholarship that aims to help bring women into prominentroles in the industry.
Entitled "G.I.R.L.," or "Gamers in Real Life," the scholarship of up to$10,000 is being rewarded as a prize for a Game Design Competition.Entrants must "complete an online application and submit an in-gamedesign, concept art" and a pair of essays.
"The secret is out: Females game. We're just trying to encourage morewomen to make the games they obviously enjoy playing," said SOE'sTorrie Dorrell. "With the application process starting today, we'retaking a concrete step towards opening the door a little wider forwomen who want to go into game development, and that can only helpexpand our industry's audience."
Aside from the scholarship, which is a significant step forward from past efforts, the grand prize winner will also enjoy a paid internship at one of thethree different Sony Online Entertainment studios located across theUS. Applications opened officially on April 1 and the deadline is April15. For more information, visit the G.I.R.L. website.
