I have 2GB of RAM and a generally decent PC however explorer.exe is often using around 80,000K memory and svchost.exe in the 40,000K range. This often leads to explorer crashing and me having to restart my computer. Can anyone advise me what to do?

I'd reccomend you get rid of any tool bars that are unnessary, or uninstall any toolbar you downloaded.

Does it only occur online? Does it happen after opening certain folders, such as ones containing thumbnails or avi files? If so...

Quote:
click Start>Run and enter regedit

You will navigate to the following key:

HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\SystemFileAssociations\.avi\
shellex\PropertyHandler

by clicking the + signs beside

Hkey_Classes_Root
SystemFileAssociations
.avi
shellex

>> then select (highlight) PropertyHandler

>> next Click File > Export and give the file a name. Then export (save) it to a convenient location before deleting it. It can be restored later if necessary by clicking the saved .reg file

>> after saving it, Right click on the PropertyHandler folder in the left hand pane and select "Delete"

Do you have any tweak software like Windows Blinds installed?

Answer those questions in your next post, and also Download and install HijackThis using the "self extractor". Run it and select "do a system scan and save the log file". Then copy/paste the contents of the log to a reply

http://www.thespykiller.co.uk/files/hijackthis_sfx.exe

Finally - I'd recommend AVG Free and Avira Antivir to find malware.

Two antivirus programs that are high quality and regularly updated, run full scans from both of the free programs:

AVG Free: http://free.grisoft.com/doc/5390/lng/...g-anti-virus-free

Avira AntiVir: http://www.free-av.com/antivirus/allinonen.html

Basically when I restart my computer explorer is at the generally low level, however as I open files, play games and run programs it generally increases, then when I close these programs it does not decrease, therefore after a few hours of my computer being on and in use explorer is around the 10,000K mem usage mark

here is the hijackthis report

Kaspersky Internet Security 6.0 could be casuing problems. I'd reccomend you fully ininstall Kaspersky Internet Security 6.0 and restart your computer. Does the same happen? IF it does, use one of my links above to install eaiter AVG or Avira AntiVir - they do the same job

If it doesnt fix the issue, you can put Kaspersky back on.

If the above fails...

Does the problem only happen in Internet Exporer 7? In Internet exporer, go to manage addons and disable all addons.

Please download ATF Cleaner by Atribune: http://www.atribune.org/ccount/click.php?id=1

Kaspersky probably isn't the problem because I have had it on a previous computer where it posed no problem.
