Here are some FAQs I can answer

What exactly is a modded xbox?
It an xbox that has been modified, usually meaning a modchip installed.

What can you do extra?
Larger HDD's, faster IDE cables, install dolby digital modifications, HDD led modifications, and power rest led modifications.

How do they work, and what do thay change?
They replicate the original bios and basically remove the signature check and other security measures.

How are they installed?
The best ones are soldered into place.

Also I heard you cannot use Xbox Live, why?
You can use xbox live if the modchip is switched off/disabled, but if you have used that xbox on xbox live and change the hdd, then if you use xbox live you will probably be banned, MS don't want users using xbox live with modchips enabled for several reasons. 1.) they want you to purchase an original game and not be using a copy/backup and 2.) they want everyone to be playing on a level ground, for example I could modify my game files so I have the most powerfull gun and unlimited ammo, with a modchip disabled and an original game this is not possible.

What other uses do Mod chips Have?
Obviously the main use it to play pirate/copies/or backups, it will also play any region game or DVD movie as well as PAL or NTSC, you can install your own apps to the hdd, different dashboards, media players, even install and run linux, once the siganmture check has been removed, the xbox can basically run any programs that are designed for xbox, this can be home made software or none proffessional software, like almost all of the filemanager, media players and dashboards that are available for the xbox, including the excellent emulators such as MAMEoX, FBA, DGEN, SNES, C64, PS ONE, SURREAL etc etc. You can also watch DVD movies without the need for the official DVD playback kit. You can also use a free service similar to xbox live but of course you can use backup/copies on this, see: http://www.teamxlink.co.uk/ and http://www.xbconnect.com/
