I was going to work on another project that entailed putting my own 3D models into Garry's Mod, but that all changed when a friend of mine sent me a very tempting instant message. It was less of a message, and, well, more of a.... uhm.... way to get \"into the Windows Vista Beta,\" to say the least.
First thing I'd like to say: Vista runs smooth as butter on this box. No, not the Dell in my sig, but the box I'm about to list below. At this time, I'd like to note that the \"4-6 GHz dual-core\" and \"2 GB RAM\" FUD spread by alternate-OSers can be renamed from \"FUD\" to \"BS.\"
In any case, I really like Vista. Everything I've installed has worked (except ZoneAlarm Firewall) and it's worked well. This build of Vista is stable, fast, and absolutely gorgeous. I'm really interested in the final version that's been pushed back so many times... because Vista ruled right from the start.
I really liked the user interface. It was sleek, fast, and flat out beautiful. Everything just... looked and felt like it was just working. Few, if any hiccups whatsoever. The glass effect was outstanding, just as were the window effects. Windows don't just pop in and pop out anymore, if you're opening a program, the window fades in and slides forward, where the opposite happens when you're closing one. Real-time previews make themselves known all over the place in Vista, videos and music visualizations continue unabated in Alt + Tab, Flip3D (Windows Key + Tab) and the taskbar hover previews.
Sadly, my Vista box is a little too pokey to do full screen screen recording at 1024x768, let alone 1280x1024. I would have pushed it to 1600x1200, but my monitor doesn't do that. :)
Anyways, pics.
I also made a video, though you may need XviD to play it. If you have DefilerPak, it should work. I tried installing Vista on my laptop (850 MHz, 256 MB SDRAM, Rage 8 MB) but it didn't go. I'm not giving up on Pentium III's yet.
Well, I am Tri-Booting including the newest Build of Vista. But ATI does not have drivers out for it yet? And NVIDIA only has sound drivers which work.
So, I did not play around with it much, until I can get some working drivers.
ATI's like... the only hardware maker I could find that had drivers for Vista...
...I didn't need to install them, as my Radeon 9600 is apparently supported from within Windows Vista. I just like to have updated drivers/software, so I got 'em... and Half-Life 2 just finished updating. So I can go and refute the Inquirer now. :)
Windows Vista is running very well on this system, it makes me really wonder what the hell they're doing that requires another eight months. Vista is going to rule.
I haven't done any multi-booting yet... but I'm going to put Kubuntu Linux 5.1 on here (for GRUB only :D) and then I'm gonna try something else...
I agree. I love it, too. What build are you using? In regards to that improved Alt+Tab - I hope there aren't any problems with it like there is with topdesk. I guess topdesk uses OpenGL, so it doens't work when you have games running (and visa versa)
Yeah, every new build is starting to look better and better. Hopefully Microsoft just sticks with what they said earlier about making Vista relatively cheap, compared to earlier operating systems.

If you care to look at NVIDIA's driver section, you will find drivers for Vista x86 and Vista x64. ;)

I already posted a link to ATI's Vista drivers in my reply to Super XP. The word \"them\" in paragraph two is hyperlinked (we could stand to have underlined hyperlinks, it's hard to see 'em the way they are). For clarity, they're here:
theyre taking forever to make sure ity doesnt run on macs ;)
Just about aaaaany Intel Mac (even, possibly, the Mac Mini with GMA950) will run Vista just fine.

and how do games run on vista?
I played some Half-Life 2: Lost Coast. I'll be honest - it was very choppy, but I could play it. I am willing to bet this had to do with my limited RAM more than anything else... but there's no question that Vista eats a modest bit more RAM than Windows XP.
Still, when I played Lost Coast, the load times were incredulous. Windows detected this and had a dialog that said \"System Slowdowns detected,\" with some options to turn off some of the background stuff (I opted not to, for kicks). T'was neat.
EDIT: I made a video of my gaming. Once again, XviD is needed, DefilerPak works.

how much space does vista take on the harddrive?
A gargantuan amount. And by \"gargantuan amount,\" I mean that the \"C:\WINDOWS\\" folder is 6.78 GB.

no i was taking about detecting the mac and refusiong to work with it anyways
HL2 Coast on your computer there runs about the same as regular HL2 without special effects runs on mine (without those long hiccups) actually it runs on mine i little faster than that but not much.
p.s. i can watch your videos just fine in window media player.

That would lose sales on Microsoft's part. They wouldn't be inclined to do that.

Yeah, it's the long hiccups that I was getting at. That's a RAM problem, I imagine with a gig of RAM you'd be just fine.

Mine is only less then 5GB, and total installation is 5.17 (I have installed firefox, I believe that's all that I have installed so far, other then drivers).
I got a copy... build 5342. Installing to a 2nd hard drive as I type.
It's weird. I had a 65GB partition that I used for all things not Windows, and I would always keep it about 5-15GB empty... but then I added a 120GB HDD and now I have 5GB free on the 65GB partition and only 30GB on the 120GB HDD...
Weird how junk expands to fill the alloted space. :(
Hey Pikl... what build are you running? 5342 is not letting me run my video card... At all. I see a good theme, but its no Aero.
It upsets me, because if the video card worked, I just may have fun using Visa. However, even with 1GB of RAM, it is SLOW! (with 44 processes running... w/o any programs running) Windows is using 425+MB of RAM. Also, there are a lot of bugs for the more advanced areas (such as computer properties).
I may just install 5308 to see if that works.
