But... $1799!!... and one USB port!
4th thing: There's something in the air

There's something in the air
As you know, Apple makes the best notebooks in the industry. Today, we are introducing a third kind of notebook. It's called the MacBook Air

Most people think of Sony TZ series when they think of thin notebooks. Competition specs: 3 lbs, .8-1.2 inches, 11 or 12" display, miniature keyboard, and slower processor.

We thought 3 lbs is a good target weight, but there was too much compromise with the other features The eeePc, we all know is crap... and its just usable for every day use!

Reminds me of the old thinkpad?

Could this be an Apple TV?

A load of fads? We wanted a tabled c... wheres the innovation apple!

We thought 3 lbs is a good target weight, but there was too much compromise with the other features.
MacBook Air is 0.16" to 0.76". The thickest part of the MacBook Air is thinner than the thinnest part of the Sony. It fits inside a envelope.Magnetic latch, 13.3" widescreen display
Display is LED backlit. iSight is built-in. MacBook-like keyboard, but with an ambient light sensor.

The Multi-touch trackpad also.

Move a window by double-tap and move. Rotate a photo by pivoting your index finger around your thumb. You can also use the iPhone's pinching gesture to enlarge and shrink an image.

  • 1.6 GHz Standard
  • 1.8 GHz Option
  • Intel Core 2 Duo
  • 80 GB hard disk standard
  • 64 GB SSD as an option. "they're pricy, but they're fast"
  • 1.8" Hard Drive

Has a 64 GB solid state drive, too!! Wow! Otherwise, an 80GB drive.

Comes with an Intel Core 2 Duo, one of them, at 1.6GHz. There's a 1.8 GHz option, too. Said they went to Intel to get that processor 60% smaller than before, which is what made the MacBook Air possible. Paul Otellini, CEO of Intel, is on stage.

802.11n + Bluetooth 2.1/EDR
Other features: 45 Watt MagSafe, 1 USB 2.0 port, Micro-DVI, Audio Out

2 GB Memory standard
Only 5 hours of Battery Life
No optical drive, but a Superdrive accessory is available for $99. Also, software comes with the MacBook Air that allows you to "borrow" a Mac or PCs optical drive.
2 GB Memory standard

What do we normally do with these drives? Play movies, install software, burn CDs... guess what, we have a much better way. We can wirelessly rent movies, we have a much better way than burning CDs -- most of us have iPods in our car. For making backups we have Time Machine and Time Capsule to wirelessly back up our laptops. What about installing software?"

"We're going to do that wirelessly too. We have a new feature built into the MBA called remote disc."

"You'll see in the finder called Remote Disc -- it will show you all the Macs and PCs that have some special software on them, and you can pick one of those machines and ask to borrow its optical drive.

So its a 1k envelope...? Apple have lost it. Its worse than the iPhone, no person in their right mind will buy this.

Environmental highlights: fully aluminum case (good for recycling), first fully mercury and lead free display, circuit boards are BFR free, retail packaging are 56% less volume than MacBook.

New Ad for MacBook Air. Plays off of the ability to fit in an envelope.

Why didnt me pick up on this in May?

Unlike other prototype designs, this design is to go intro production later this year with an unspecified manufacturer, according to Businessweek.

"Intel wants to stimulate the conversation," says Roger Kay, president of consultancy Endpoint Technologies Associates.

Other design-oriented features include different color choices, one side featuring an E Ink screen, and the addition of a shoulder strap.

Wireless Wi-Fi and WiMac network compatability is indluded along with fingerprint reader and flash harddrive (not a normal hdd) imrpoving battery life by 14 hours!T

Apple has been rumored to be entering the market with a flash-based laptop in the near future. Rumors have touched on the possibilities of an ultra thin model. Apple's recent patent applications have revealed that they are actively working on thinner/stronger enclosures for future laptop designs.

For once the rumour mills were right. "There's something in theair," said Steve Jobs. And then he hit us with the MacBook Air. It’saluminium, has black keys, is super, super thin, and Steve held iteasily with his fingertips.

The audience actually gasped as Mr Jobs presented the MacBook Air

“It’s the world’s thinnest notebook,” he went on. It has a 13.3inwidescreen, LED backlit display that’s instant-on. It also has abuilt-in iSight camera, and a full-sized, back-lit keyboard, with atrackpad and multi-touch gesture support on the trackpad.

Skinny

MacBook air goes from 0.76in down to 0.16in at the thin end. Thethickest part is thinner than the Sony TZ Series. 0.76in vs. 0.8in. Ithas a width of 12.8in, depth of 8.94in and weighs in at 1.36kg. It’s sothin, it even fits inside a vanilla envelope - as Mr Jobs demonstrated.

Widescreen 13.3in LED-backlit display

The Macbook Air packs an Intel Core 2 Duo processor (with 4MBon-chip shared L2 cache running at full processor speed), 1.6 GHzstandard, with a 1.8GHz upgrade available. Intel shrunk its Core 2 Duoprocessors down to a package 60 per cent smaller in order to fit itinside the MacBook Air.

Thinnovation

With Wi-Fi on, browsing the web, you get 5 hours of battery life, according to Jobs. You will also have the choice of the standard 80GBhard disk drive or optional, build-to-order 64GB solid-state drive.
It also comes with built-in AirPort Extreme Wi-Fi wirelessnetworking (EEE 802.11n and 802.11a/b/g compatible) and Bluetooth 2.1 +EDR.
