Jack, the MTBF (mean time between failures) of the Raptor is 5,000,000 hours, or about 570 years.
570 Years?
Well in that case, I think we need a better warranty. I mean, can you imagine if you are in the year 2150 & your HD Raptor brakes down? Western Digital may not be around @ that time, so just say bye bye to there ridiculous warranty.
Seagate would be my pick because of there reliability. They may not be the fastest drives, but the real-wolrd performance difference is really small between other 7200 RPM drives. Also Maxtor has some very nice drives that perform well, but I am not too sure about their reliability. I visit plenty of forums and it seems Maxtors are dieing the most. This does not really mean they are bad though. I mean, it could just be because they are really popular. Of course you don't hear about the less popular drives dieing much, but that doesn't mean that they are reliable. It is just they are not as popular.

MTBF is the average elapsed time that passes before a failure occurs in a batch of drives under intense test conditions, NOT the average expected lifespan of a single drive.
Also with the exception of a few models with outright design problems or the odd bad batch, most hard drives from all manufacturers are similar in reliability when they leave the factory and the most common cause of HD failures is mishandling/abuse during shipping/storage.

Um, what does that have to do with anything? I was pointing out the fact that you were mis-interpreting the meaning of MTBF. The manufacturer of a drive saying their reliability is unsurpassed also means nothing.

I was not misinterpreting the meaning of MTBF. I know what it is.

Western Digital seems the be the best. At my school, its the only thing we use, unless someone donates a computer. We've never had any problems with the drives themselves. On my computer, I am running a WD SATA drive, and I have never had any problems with it as well.
