Is the Raptor @ 10,000RPM the fastest commerical hard drive? I am excluding SCSI drives which go up to 15,000RPM.

Why exclude SCSI drives? Their comercial, they just cost an arm and a leg.

Last time i looked Raptors wernt cheap either so why dont we exclude those and stick to the 7,200 rpm drives?

After the raptor id say either the Maxtor DimondMax Plus 10 or the Seagate Barracuda is probably the fastest.

Dave.

I think the Maxtor's new HD may come close.

Maxtors 200GB, 250GB, 300GB & 350GB SATA2 w/ 9.3ms access time & 16MB buffer cache w/ 7200RPM.

The Raptor is still faster due to it's 10,000RPM, but at the cost of HD storage.

WD Raptor
Rotational Speed 10,000 RPM
Buffer Size 8 MB
Buffer To Host (Serial ATA) 150 MB/s
Storage so far is 74GB
No current support for NCQ.

Maxtor SATA2
Rotational Speed 7,200 RPM
Buffer Size 16 MB
Buffer To Host (Serial ATA 2) 300 MB/s
Storage so far is 350GB
Supports NCQ.

Seems like the Raptor and the Maxtor are about tied. Actually David, Fry's Electronics sells 74GB Raptors for around 150$ (with rebate). I think original price was like 200$ or 220$, but it had like a 50$ rebate.

Over here the 74Gb raptor sells for arround ?125 if i spend ?5 more i can get a 300Gb DiamondMax 10 with 16mb cache.

IMHO the raptor is overpriced and overrated.

No I disagree. The 10,000RPM and the very fast seek times make the Raptor almost unbeatable.

Id rather have 200+ extra Gb of space than a little extra performance anyday, it realy  just depends on what you want at the end of the day.

I get by on this old 5,600 rpm samsung just fine, it doesnt hold back on games and my boot time is still less than 30 secconds.

I stick by what i said \"overpriced and overrated\"

David.

That would be great. And still have a 16MB buffer cache w/ SATA 2 interface.

nope will have to be a 32 meg cash. remeber a 10k drive is a lot difrent in make. will need to be able to push info at a higher rate. Hard to do when you have a larg harddrive unless you can store more in the buffer with a faster read rate.
