One of the more unique titles to hit the Wii is one that usually doesn't get much recognition. Nintendo's Link's Crossbow Training, which came packaged with the Wii Zapper, came out of Miyamoto's fascination with first-person titles. A new "Iwata Asks" interview with Shigeru Miyamoto put out by Nintendo has some great new details about how the pack-in game came to be.
Speakingon the title, Miyamoto revealed some interesting tidbits about the gameitself and his development style. When questioned about why he chose tomake a first person game, Miyamoto explained that FPS games are amonghis favorite type of games: "I want people to be able to get reallyinto the 3D geography, so it feels like you're really there," heexplained. "At first when we were developing The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time, I even proposed using a first-person perspective… I was proactively supporting such projects like the 007 GoldenEye game."
Miyamoto continued to describe the process of creating the Wii Zapperitself, which would aid in the easing in of new gamers to the FPSgenre. "Initially we just made the frame from wires and attached theWii Remote and Nunchuk to it with rubber bands. It was a really simpleprototype," Miyamoto explained. "..among [the many prototypes] weresome really cool ones, like one that used an extra battery to vibratethe gun when you hit a target."
The interview in its entirety is a fascinating read, as Miyamotochronicles his interpretation of the history of FPS games and consoles, the development of the Wii Zapper, and some other tidbits about Wii Fitand more. Check it out.
