Well what google uses for programming is a closely guarded secret I'm sure. I can assume that they pretty much use it all. I remember when I was looking at some of the job listings they were looking for python programmers. I'm sure the truth of what they use is out there but it sounds just like the myths and I don't know which to believe.
I also know they use a lot of AJAX for client side too.

They use python a lot for the simpler stuff like their faq/help center, maybe some other front-end pages. I would imagine their core search engine and spiders are either C or C++, I know they have released a few open source projects which are C++. I am guessing they use these in their products, otherwise why would they make them.
I've heard that they hard-coded a lot of server stuff that basically ends up working like a webserver only capable of displaying their stuff. Basically, a super-optimized set of servers, each made for a certain task. I've heard said servers are written in C++.
Google has a policy of letting the developers use whatever language they think is most appropriate for the task at hand.
Most of the core search engine is written in C++. Much of the heavy processing is done using their MapReduce C++ library.
A lot of other stuff is written in Python and some bits in Java.

Google has also acquired a boat-load of other companies over the years, so some of their code will be in whatever those companies were using.
So what do we think Google uses, and how... What do you think Google.com is running...?
i think they probably use everything they'ld have employed developers who code in whatever language they want, then there's someone who's compiled it all. of course we'ld never really know (unless Google told us), cause they've got some darn.htaccess or the windows equivalent esk going on. most of the large websites sorta hide all their extensions, its a bit annoying to say the least. google, youtube, ebay, paypal ect all do it. selfish buggas
