Should i get a pda?? in Hardware, Internet, Networking, Comms and Security
I think integration sucks...maybe you feel differently

But whenever I have a chance to buy a motherboard with less crap on it...I do.
Who wants a mobo with built in video?  Back in the day mobos that had no sound, video, lan were the ISH because you could buy whatever add-in cards you wanted and you didn't have to disable some stupid crap on the mobo.

Anyhow...

How often do you take pictures now?  How often do you use a cell phone?  What about organization stuff...do you have a real need for all of this crap.  Plus music--do you carry around a CD-player now?

Just because you HAVE THE CAPABILITY doesn't mean you will use it.  My MP3 player sat on my desk for proabably about 5 months collecting dust...I just put 45 songs on it for use at the gym.

I've got a bunch of PDA's sitting in my drawers at work.
My digital camera spends most of the time on the shelf next to my computer...except when I want to take some pictures of my kids...then I take it out.

I think you get more quality when you invest in a device that doesn't try to be EVERYTHING to EVERYONE.

Most Stable Linux? in Software

In all the years I've messed with Linux, I haven't found anything that runs 1/2 as stable as anything Microsoft offers.

You are actually saying that Microsoft is most stable than Linux?  :o  :ph43r:

no, I'm saying that MS products are MORE stable---at least out of the box.  How often have you installed an MS OS...and had issues from it RIGHT OFF THE BAT.

I'm not talking about after you installed all of your garbage software--I'm saying a basic default install, drivers installed + patches...how often has it crashed out on you?

Me--I'd say a few times, but not very often.  Now Linux on the other hand...different story entirely.  I've tried, I've really tried screwing with a bunch of different flavors of Linux and 99% of the time, I go through the pain in the a** of downloading 3-4 CD's, burning them, then installing them...only to end up with an OS that runs slower than my grandma (who's paralyzed).

You click on an \"INCLUDED\" application within Linux and...wait....wait...crap, it's not responding, use X-KILL or KILL-X whatever that stupid \"X\" thing is that ends dumb tasks that don't respond.  I don't think I've ever had that problem with an application included in a MS OS.

Moving on up.
Here's an example of how screwed up Fedora is.  Fedora Core 2...default install/kernel.  If you attempt to access the CD-ROM, when you select a file to copy it or access it...it disappears.  Attempt to access from command-line...no dice.  I don't know if this happens on all installs of FC2--but it happened REPEATEDLY on my Toshiba Satellite Pro 6100 laptop.  Kernel update fixed that.

Ok so no complaints.

COOL...Fedora 3 is out.
I decide to install FC3 figuring...well, it's got to be better right?  WRONG.  First off, I tried to install the newest X Org server...that wouldn't work...just kept blowing up.  So I said screw it. (even though it worked on FC 2 with no problems)--
Soooo I go to install the Nvidia driver for my Mobile Geforce...and that doesn't work either...even though it worked on FC2.

I'm telling you...Linux has its' place, but it's far from mainstream.

Cure for Cancer? in General Discussion, including Off Topic, Current Affairs

Indeed, coral calcium is composed of mostly calcium carbonate, just like those you found in Tums or other calcium carbonate supplements from the stores! In addition, in June 2003, the Federal Trade Commission FTC has charged the marketers of Coral Calcium Supreme with making false and unsubstantiated claims about the product's health benefits. In Sept 2004, the marketer for Coral Calcium Supreme Kevin Trudeau (who has previously been jailed for credit card and financial fraud) was banned from appearing in other health-related informercials. For the details of these charges, visit www.ftc.gov.

--my choice isn't on there. Red Hat is now a pay-for product

how come i can download it then?    am i missing out on current life existance?

Well, my choice was the first one. And I think they are all free.

If you look here:
http://www.redhat.com/choice/

Fedora Core is the community supported version of Red Hat.
The *real* red hat costs $$$$

You're basically paying for support...I don't know the difference between the Red Hat Core and the Fedora Core but believe you me, there is a difference.

Windows 3.1, 95, 98, 98SE, 2000, ME, NT in Software
Biggest thing I remember about 98 was it NEVER SHUT DOWN CORRECTLY.

When I was in the USMC--mostly all of the machines were 98 and everyone would power down at night--the next morning you'd have that screen still on the monitor

\"Windows is shutting down\"

Intel's Dual-Core in Hardware, Internet, Networking, Comms and Security
Dell also makes Xeon systems...

But custom jobby or factory deal--I don't think it makes too much of a difference...especially when you're not overclocking or anything like that.

Theoretically, two computers running the same chipset, same ram, same procs and disks--you should get about the same results on benchmark...

Eating PPC architecture. in Programming, Web and Software Design/Development
Yeah I'll agree that Java has its uses...but it's being used in some bad ways by some piss poor developers.

A good example is an application my company just purchased--I won't go into details for confidentiality purposes of myself and also the crappy software manufacturers...but basically they used Java to write an ERP application that is used on ships that are out at sea.

This application runs slower than a man with no legs.  It's a major piece of crap.

Windows 3.1, 95, 98, 98SE, 2000, ME, NT in Software
I would have chosen NT if I could have picked 3.  2000 and XP are both basically a dressed up version of NT 4.0...And if you want to get really technical, you forgot NT 3.51 on the polling list.  You may have forgotten DOS...but you may have been in diapers at the time that DOS was in wide use (but I guess it's not a windows operating system...it IS an MS OS though).

You've got to figure that the OS's should just keep getting better than what we seen in years past.  I would have chosen NT 4.0 over 98 any day--when that's all we had.  Why?

Configured correctly, NT is a pretty d**n stable environment.  Plus it has the ability to be very secure.  NT was a network operating system, 98 wasn't.  98 was a home desktop environment and while it could be networked, it wasn't very good at it.

The big drawbacks to NT were managing devices...there was no device manager like there was in 98 (or 95)...But once you knew how the system worked, you were golden...well driver support was fairly scarce in some areas also.

2000 I think was a launch-pad for XP.  Seemed like they took all the nice features of NT and 98 and put them together into 2000.  What was different about 2000?
It was a NOS from the get-go.  Security...NTFS...Local Security Policy.

Windows 98SE was BS.  It was Windows 98 with a few features...what were they?  I think it was Internet Connection Sharing and....something else I can't remember.  But the \"SE\" tag was BS.

ME was and still is the biggest garbage P.O.S. operating system that Microsoft has ever put out.  Windows 3.1 is by far better...probably faster too.

What's the Best Browser You've Used? in Software
I've been an IE fan since the good old days.  The only time I thought Netscape was a better choice than IE was waaaaay back in 1996 or so.  I remember netscape had the ability to upload from the browser...that was some s**t back then.

Nowadays, I get more trouble calls about Netscape Browser and Email than anything else.  Firefox is a good browser, but I just prefer IE.

Intel's Dual-Core in Hardware, Internet, Networking, Comms and Security
I'm interested in seeing that new quad core that Sony, IBM and Toshiba have been working on.  It's said to smoke anything that we've seen in recent years or hope to see from AMD or INTEL.  Imagine that...a new contender in CPU's...it'll rock.

As for what is better, AMD or INTEL..to each his own.

I think INTEL is a little too expensive for what they offer.

I remember just a few years ago, a buddy of mine purchased a computer from Dell with all of the bells and whistles--running an Intel as fast as was available at the time.  I purchased an Abit Board along with an AMD XP chip--and we benchmarked them.

For the most part, I spanked his hiney...and for significantly less than his machine cost. :ph43r:
