The 2008 Game Developers Conferencewas a wonderful time, although the sheer amount of things to see, hear, and do means that everyone was bound to miss something they wereinterested in. Luckily, Valve has put the slides for all their lecturesup on its publication page. While some slides can be a little confusing without the speakerpresent, there are many insights about the game development process tobe gleaned from the offering.
The lectures available:
Kim Swift and Erik Wolpaw, "Integrating Narrative and Design: A Portal Post-Mortem," Game Developer's Conference, February 2008. Slides
Jason Mitchell, "Stylization With a Purpose: The Illustrative World of Team Fortress 2," Game Developer's Conference, February 2008. Slides
Elan Ruskin, "How To Go From PC to Cross Platform Development Without Killing Your Studio," Game Developer's Conference, February 2008. Slides
Alex Vlachos, "Post Processing in The Orange Box," Game Developer's Conference, February 2008. Slides
The set of slides about narrative in Portal is fascinating, andshould be helpful to anyone trying to figure out how to weave a cleverstory or even characterization into their games. I'm glad thisinformation was made publicly available, and I really wish I would havehad time to see some of these lectures.
Enjoy!
