I'd build my own. But, if I'd have to buy a pre-built, it'd be a compaq.
You're kidding right? :o Dell's desktops blow away Compaq & HP, but HP's servers blow away Dell. Also PsychoArmyKid, Pentium is a processor...not a proprietary. I will be changing around some of the choices.

I would build my own for myself. If I was going to buy one though, I would defintly go with alianware, even though they are very overpriced. They have a lot of good builds, and they are meant for gaming. If someone else was buying one, for just a regular \"at-home\" computer, I would recommend a Dell, since they do have good customer service (though they are a pain in the arse to work on!!!).
In as far as personal customizations go, building your own is the only way for me. Alienware makes decent systems [though I've seen a few buggy ones] but they're primarily for the gaming soul. Seriously overpriced - you'd pay way too much for what? The fancy \"Alien\" case?
Compaq...I'm not even going to comment on Compaq.
Dell is great for the average computer user. That's why they sell so many, they mass produce basic systems that appeal to the great majority of the people. Face it, not everyone is intelligent with anything that has the word \"computer\" anywhere near it. What reels most people in is the support though.
All of my systems are home built mid-range systems [having a wife, daughter, and low paying job really take it's toll on upgrades.]
In the end, it really all depends on what the user is going to be doing with said Computer. Running CAD? Or browsing along the internet playing PopCap games?
I would build my own. But if I had to buy one, I think it would be a packard bell system. I had a packard bell system before and it was good (costed ?1800 at the time.. ?3000 with the extended guarantee.. that's like $5000.. lol)
Although the prices are very different today. If I wanted a gaming system, I *might* go with alienware. But I'm not 100% sure.
I'll never buy a computer.. Build them is the only way for me. Cheaper, and you get exactly what you want. Alienware's systems are certainly high spec, but I would never pay such an outrageous price for nice looks.
