Some more here... Xen is a freeware Virtual PC program, and Nvu is a freeware web editor comparable to Microsoft Frontpage.
Also, there's Lavalys Everest Home 2.20. This application is no longer updated or supported by Lavalys, but it's last stable version (2.20) is still available for download. It's gives you all kinds of information about a system.
On a similar note, there's SiSoftware Sandra Lite 2005 SR3, a program not quite as informative (in my opinion) as Everest, but it has a good deal more punch in benchmarking... especially if you have a Pentium 4! :D
Finally, and I believe someone mentioned it, there is CCleaner (Crap Cleaner), a darned good program for Windows XP. I can personally attest to this program repairing one of my computers in one fell swoop. It's amazing, scheduleable, fast and free. Windows XP machines armed with a good firewall, antivirus, antispyware, browser and this are the machines that Mac users are afraid of -- because they run perfectly and put OS X to shame. :)

It looks like the third installment of FlyakiteOSX is now up for grabs, it's a total them revamp that makes Windows-run PC's look like Macs running Mac OS X. I fly Windows colors... but... if you like the Mac interface, more power to you. You can have it for much, much cheaper. :)
A few things I'd like to point out about this thread...
...the green headline text is annoying. Replace it with something with higher contrast, like red or something. Next...

For Windows XP users you could just turn on the built-in Windows Firewall.
The built-in firewall filters only incoming traffic, whereas all of those third-party applications filter all network to computer traffic. Additionally, malicious software makers are probably targeting this firewall first and foremost, and so some software may bypass it easily. This recommendation is probably a security risk.

Microsoft AntiSpyware
This is now known as Windows Defender.

It is recommended to use one of the above browsers rather then IE for security reasons.
Internet Explorer 6 and 7 have both come a long way, such that using one of them won't make much of a difference relative to other browsers in similar conditions. It would be wise to post a link to the Internet Explorer 7 download location.
We should also pick through this thread, and take software applications that people mentioned and add them to the list, whilst deleting their post afterwards. Then everything is in one, concise location for the passerby user to see.
