As games become more and more complicated and advanced, they're also moving away from iconic representation. While the realism may immerse some players, it may also make games seem ever more arbitrary to non-gamers because the visual representations of underlying mechanics grow ever more subtle or even eliminated in the name of authenticity. Apart from this issue, should graphics be more expressive and indicative of what's going on in the mechanics? Games are often more about reacting to an action than making a decision about in imminent action. Could this be a bigger hurdle for non-gamers than game designers think, and should they address the issue?
