Corsair Memory has a nice PDF available where they discuss the relationship between a systems memory amount and its performance advantages.

Quote:
“The performance increase realized in real-world applications like Battlefield 2 and Adobe Premier Effects elements indicate that the current generation of enthusiast systems will certainly benefit from the selection of 2GB memory arrays. These benefits will become greater in the next six months as new memory-intensive applications and games are brought to market,” the article concludes.

I just read that article in my Xbit Labs e-mail subscription.

In most of the games they showed, there was only a 6FPS increase. But, in the other categories, 2GB did show much higher improvement over 1GB.

I saw that earlier, it helped actually more than I thought it would.  I really didn't think there was going to be much of any difference with that extra GB.  But, it did really only help in like 2 or 3 apps that they tested.

But, the question is, are consumers willing to be 2GB of RAM?

I think most of us are more than satisifed with 1GB or even 512MB, but there are a few who want more. (i.e. PCGURU, Intel Fan Boyz, Turbo 64)

I really think 1GB is the perfect amount for 75% of people, the perfect balance between price and performance.

I agree, but with games like BF2, F.E.A.R. and games in the future really taking advantage of 2GB it is a good investment.  You can't even run BF2 at high settings well without 1.5GB of RAM.  Going with 2GB would be better for the obvious reason that it is more RAM and so you can buy just two identical 1Gb sticks for dual-channel.

It may even be a good idea for people building new systems that cannot afford 2GB at the moment to just buy a 1GB stick.  You won't be able to run dual channel and timings on 1GB sticks are slightly worse then those for 512MB sticks, but you get the added benefit of being able to just add another stick later as opposed to running 4x512MB.

Yes, that's true, but it will cost a bit more.  What's wrong with running 4X512?

When running 4 sticks you have to run a 2T command rate and I have seen problems with some motherboards.  So it is best to run 2x1GB if you want 2GB.

runing 2T with 4 sticks is not true with AMD 64,s . But they will default ddr 333 when runing all 4 sticks. Its best to run 2 sticks in duel.

Actually you are wrong.  With the new revision cores they fixed the issues of them running at DDR333, but they still run at 2T.

AMD engineers promised to eliminate this problem in the new Venice core and they did keep their word. Athlon 64 processors based on Venice can work with four single-side DDR400 SDRAM modules without any limitations, and if there are double-side DDR400 SDRAM DIMMs installed, they can work at 400MHz with 2T timing.
