i'm on a tight budget and i need a new desktop pc for gaming. i want the computer to be able to play dawn of war and other stradegy games. I went on the dell website and configured this:
-Intel? Pentium? 4 Processor 640 w/HT Technology (3.2GHz,800FSB) -1GB Dual Channel DDR2 SDRAM at 533MHz -80GB Serial ATA 3Gb/s Hard Drive (7200RPM) w/ 8MB cache -Single Drive: 48x CD-RW / DVD-ROM Combo Drive -13 in 1 Media Card Reader -17 inch E176FP Analog Flat Panel Monitor -256MB PCI Express? x16 (DVI/VGA/TV-out) ATI Radeon X600 SE HyperMemory -Integrated Sound Blaster? Audigy? ADVANCED HD Audio -Dell A215 Speakers
at this point the computer costs about $800 [USD].
can anyone tell me if this will be sufficient for what games i want to play? also, i would like to know if i can get something similar to this one for cheaper off another website.
the thing is is that i don't know much about buildung PCs. if it would be significantly cheaper than having it already built then i guess i could call over my uncle to help me build it.
this comes to a total of $822.89 cheaper than the dell [by about $20], plus it has a better video card, better hard drive, better sound card and better keyboard, mouse and speakers. can anyone tell me if these are all compatable and if i have everything i need?

It all looks good to me, except if you want it for gaming, Intel is not the way to go for your processor. AMD is, by far, the best for gaming. Plus, that 660GT is starting to get a little on the old side. It won't be able to play the newest games very well.

The Dell has a better keyboard, mouse and processor. Just thought I'd letcha know.
And, as Josh said, you'll want to go with an AMD processor for gaming right now. Though, I would think the 6600 GT, while not the fastest, would do just fine.
I would save the money on the RAM and probably up your video card to like a 6800GS. Or keep it at 2GB and get the 6800GS... but 2GB won't help a whole lot. (except in BF2)
Going with 2GB is getting closer and closer to the norm. You really only need 1GB, but it doesn't hurt to have the extra. But, if going with 1GB will allow you to get a better video card, do so. Also, that motherboard isn't a very-well known one. Better to go with DFI, MSI, EPoX, ASUS, ABIT, or maybe Chaintech or Gigabyte.

total amount is $755.90. all i have is one question about newegg.com: If you select bill me later as a payment option, how much later will you be billed?
If you didn't notice, I didn't list a monitor above. My suggestion is to buy a large used CRT. This will be much better then a cheap LCD for gaming and will save you money. I bought a 22\" CRT for only $90 w/o shipping and it is awesome.
Also, I would suggest looking at ZipZoomFly for some parts instead of Newegg since they offer free shipping on a lot of their products. That could save you quite a bit of money.
I'm thinking about buying a cheap dell and then upgrading it with some of the stuff listed here. I just found a previously ordered new Dimension E510 for $611.95. It doesn't have a video nor a sound card. so i'll add the the suggested video card and a sound card when i get it. This will come to a total of: $806.94. Here are the specs of the dell:
Hardware: -Intel Pentium 4 Processor 630 w/HT Technology (3.0GHz,800FSB) -Genuine Windows XP Home -1 GB DDR2 NON-ECC SDRAM 533MHz (2 DIMMs) -16x DVD +/- RW w/dbl layer write capability -13 in 1 Media Card Reader -USB Keyboard -USB 2 Button Mouse With upgrades: -SAPPHIRE 100106L Radeon X850XT 256MB GDDR3 PCI Express x16 Video Card - Retail -Creative Sound Blaster SB0570 Audigy SE 7.1 Channels 24-bit 96KHz PCI Interface Sound Card ? Retail
Software: -Adobe Acrobat 6.0 Reader -Dell Direct Download -Sonic Cineplayer -Software CD Software -Music Match 10.1 Software -Earthlink ISP Software -McAfee SecurityCenter with VirusScan, Firewall, Spyware Removal, 24-months -QuickBooks Simple Start Special Edition -Image Restore Software -Earthlink ISP Software -Support Software -Operating System CD -AOL 8.0 ISP Software -Photo Album 6.0 Starter -No Productivity Suite - Corel WordPerfect word processor only -Roxio Creator, My DVD LE -AOL 9.0 ISP Software -Windows Media Player Software
I guess that's ok, but remember two things The Athlon 3200 will be tons faster in games then the pentium 3.0GHz And a second thing - The PSU in the dell will likely not supply enough power for that new video card (Dell goes as cheap as possible with the PSUs), so you'll need to get a new one, most likely. Which, brings up that the new PSU probably won't fit in the Dell case (dell likes making it so that only their kind works with the case size), and so you'd need to get a new case. Which, brings up yet another thing. The Dell motherboard will likely not work in the new case, so you might need to get a new one. So, I guess you can make your own choice, keeping that in mind :)
