For Athlon 64's, RAM with faster speeds provides better performance, but of course, the latencies tend to lag. For Athlon XP's, more RAM is beneficial as opposed to speed, since their memory controller is not as advanced as that of the Athlon 64.

Re-stating the obvious. But, Intel is the multi-billion dollar company. AMD is only reaching that stage.
