Is this a good PSU?
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?...N82E16817152018

Also that RAM had 5 stars so I thought it might be good.  If I do get a 1gb stick can I go up to a total of 4gb of RAM?

You could, but 4GB is worthless right now.  There is negligible performance increase from 1GB to 2GB as it is.

Users who bought it might have had good experiences, but the rule of thumb for RAM (or almost anything else as a matter of fact) is to stay away from generic brands.

Also, don't skimp out on the PSU. It is one of the most important parts of the computer. That RAIDMAX won't cut it.

I would recommend:

Get some Corsair VS for the RAM. Fortron AX500-A for PSU.

The 6600GT is not a bad choice, but for a gaming rig I would suggest something better. The 6800GS is a great card at its price point. The X800GTO2 can flash to an X850XT, but it is sometimes not easy to find and not reasonably priced. You could consider the X800GTO. It's slightly faster and a little cheaper than the 6800 non-GT. So, it is a decent middle ground between the 6600GT and the 6800GS.

You don't need a sound card; use onboard. I doubt you will be buying expensive speakers where onboard video won't cut it.

For the DVD burner I would suggest a NEC ND-3540A. You could also consider getting a second DVD-ROM. This way you can do disk-to-disk copying. I would suggest a Lite-On 16x DVD-ROM (16P9SBLK).

What do you prefer for keyboard, mouse, and speakers?

Nothing wrong with using 4 slots. The only previous problem was that 4 sticks of 512 would default to DDR333, but the Venice core fixed that problem.

Rev E. CPU's:
4 double-sided sticks = 200mhz, 2T
4 single-sided sticks = 200mhz, 1T

Non-Rev E. CPU's:
4 double-sided sticks = 166mhz, 2T
4 single-sided sticks = 200mhz, 2T

With the Venice core they only fixed the issue with it going to 166MHz. You are still forced to run a 2T command rate with four double-sided sticks.

In certain cases, yes. In games like BF2, no.

Predators Fortron recommendation is great, but newegg overprices it.

I have a good headset that is coming with my alienware that I could use until Christmas but otherwise if they make sound I'll use them.  I'd sorta like a wireless mouse and keyboard.

I can't decide between those 2 graphic cards.

You can get the Fortron PSu cheaper at actbuy. I would try to get a better video card. Get a silver DVD-ROM so it matches with the case. A Floppy drive will not be used much at all so I would just pick whatever. Just go by reviews on newegg or something. Ity isn't exactly an important peice of hardware.

For the keyboard and mouse you could look at some Microsoft and Logitech wireless bundles. For speakers how much do you want to spend? Do you want 5.1? 2.1? What?

All right I realized I'm at the very far limits of my budget.  I think I could take my junky-butt Windows ME in the garage and maybe salvage a floppy drive, huge as heck CRT monitor, and 2 bookshelf speakers.  I don't even know if the keyboard and mouse will work with it.  I'll have to use the junk hardware while I'm overclocking it and around christmas I'll cash in on some new goods.

I'll change to a silver drive and the actbuy PSU.

Here's a good keyboard/mouse from Logitech:

Newegg seems to have some good user reviews, so if you value those, then go for this keyboard.

I second that recommendation. They may not be the best, but are not bad at all. Also, I think there is a wireless bundle just like it that is a littl bit more expensive.

I'll go with the wired version and ask for wireless for christmas.  I'm going to have to use the junky CRT monitor I have for now as I'm pretty sure my dad is getting me an LCD monitor that doubles as a tv for my birthday or christmas.

- Case - Antec Super Lanboy - $76.00
- Power Supply - FSP Group (Fortron Source) AX500-A 500W - $79.49
- Motherboard - EPoX 9NPA+ Ultra - $88.99
- Processor - AMD Opteron 146 - $189.00
- Memory - CORSAIR ValueSelect 1GB - $89.90
- Video Card - XFX GeForce 6600GT 128MB - $149.00
- Sound Card - Onboard - Free
- Hard Disk Drive(s) - Hitachi 7K80 - $53.00
- CD/DVD Drive(s) - NEC Silver IDE DVD Burner Model ND-3540A - $38.99
- Second Drive - LITE-ON Beige IDE DVD-ROM Drive Model SOHD-16P9SBLK - $19.99
- Floppy Drive - Old one I have - Free

- Keyboard & Mouse - Logitech Internet Pro Desktop - $16.00
- Monitor - Old CRT Monitor - Free
- Speakers - Headset - Free

Total: 801.36

I have a little bit over $500 right now and my birthday is tomorow.  Plus my dad is paying me to do a lot of stuff right now.  I should have enough in a week or 2.

2 problems:

That motherboard is the EPoX EP-9NPAJ, not the EP-9NPA+. Secondly, that hard drive only has a 2MB cache. It is highly recommended that you get an HDD with at least 8MB cache.

As far as hard drives go...

Go to Best Buy or Circuit City.  They almost ALWAYS have deals like a 160GB 8MB Cache, 7200RPM IDE drive for $39.99 after rebates.

Spend a little more up front, and get a lot more in return.

Thats how I buy all my non-SATA drives.  Worth it.

Also, there is a reason they call the Hitachi Deskstars \"Deathstars\".  They tend to die after 6 months to a year of good use.  They are fast, and if they don't die on you, their great drives, but just be aware of their other name.

The case is a fine choice, but you can go cheaper like a Cooler Master Centurion 5.

Also, I know I am the one that recommended the Opteron, but if you really want to go cheaper get the 3000+. The Opteron does overclock better and has more cache, but the 3000+ is still a good overclocker. Remember that if you do get to 2.8GHz it is essentially an FX-57 (the Opteron). From what I have seen it is not hard to hit 2.8GHz, but of course YMMV.

Get the EPoX 9NPA+ Ultra. Get the SATA Hitachi 7K80 (you chose IDE).

Wow, it is really annoying when people spread such BS.
